We found this to be a huge help this last trip, because many of the hotels provide a local wi-fi connection, usually in a small common area, but internet access outside of that, especially in the hotel room proved to be more difficult to connect.

It worked great- in fact I was emailing customers while we were driving down the road. Roaming in CR

Over the past 6+ years, of renting cell phones and wireless internet for Costa Rica, we have gotten countless questions about US carrier cellular phones roaming in Costa Rica. It is possible, albeit at ridiculously expensive rates, on a limited number of carriers, however most Verizon cell phones WILL NOT work in Costa Rica. Most Sprint phones will not work either. This is basically because their technology is not compatible with the network in Costa Rica. You will need a phone that takes a GSM sim card (not cdma like Verizon), unlocked, and compatible with the frequencies that the Costa Rican network is on. If you have a mobile internet card in the US, regardless of the carrier, this WILL not work with the Costa Rican phone network.

Because of the recent weather issues in Costa Rica causing emergencies and road closers, a few people traveling with some Costa Rican Cellular Connection customers found this out the hard way. Luckily for them, our customers were nice enough to loan them our phones and datacards to let people know back in the States that they were OK!

iPhone Connection in Costa Rica w/o the huge roaming rates!

Sometimes our best ideas at Costa Rica Cellular Connection come from the ingenuity of our customers. We recently launched our mobile wireless internet product for Costa Rica, to rave reviews with regards to speeds and coverage. The 3g network for Costa Rica has also allowed for greater coverage for our cellular phone rentals as well.

We had a customer who, like many iPhone users, felt awkward without having their trusty iphone with them in Costa Rica, but didn't want to pay the outrageous roaming fees that AT&T would charge them for using it in Costa Rica, usually $2-$3/minute. Since leaving home without the iPhone wasn't an option for this person, they successfully used the sim card from out datacards, to access the internet where ever there travels took them in Costa Rica. On top of that, because our service works so well, they were able to use Skype VoIp, and google talk to call home for basically nothing! GMAIL VOICE, 3G Coverage, Mobile Internet

Costa Rica Cellular Connection has always provided travelers with cellular phone rentals for Costa Rica, and recently added a Mobile Broadband Internet Product to allow people to connect to the internet anywhere in Costa Rica.

We've had a couple positive things happen with regards to the coverage on both products. With our data card service, customers have reported great coverage, almost everywhere. The second great thing is, ICE, the Costa Rican telecommunications company, built out the 3G network to accommodate mobile data, and this has really helped the coverage foot print for our 3g phones that we also rent. We are happy to report (mainly through customer feedback!) that coverage is getting really good in Costa Rica.

Other good news- Google has added a product to their GMAIL application that should allow for our wireless internet users to save money. The product is called google voice, and we have found it to be by far the cheapest VOiP option out there. We just had the pleasure of having a few days of vacation in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. We like going there near the end of August and early September, because the crowds usually mellow out, and this year was no different. We took the time to test our new high speed mobile internet product and our cell phones for quality of coverage in the area. Good news-they both worked great! Coverage has always been spotty with TDMA and GSM phones once you get over the hill close to the beach and park.

We were pleased to find we could use our data cards, to get high speed internet (we could even use skype) and use our new 3G phones EVERYWHERE, including in the park. We had the same experience driving up and down the central Pacific, even down past the remote beach town of Uvita ( beautiful beach by the way. Here's a picture!).

Many of your USA cell phones will "work" in Costa Rica these days. With ATT or T Mobile cell phone, you might be able to roam on the CR network. The problem with roaming is that exactly. You're roaming! Sometimes you get connection and sometimes you don't. Apart from coverage and connection issues, there is an extremely high when roaming in Costa Rica. Both ICE and your USA carrier will have to make money on this service, so you should expect to pay up to $2.99 per minute. The other problem is that all calls look the same to the carrier, meaning local and international calls, therefore you pay the same rate for both. You also pay that rate for incoming calls, like in the US. As for Verizon, the network is not even compatible with Costa Rica's ICE network. Verizon runs on a CDMA network. If you do not have a Blackberry Tour World phone you will have to upgrade to it and still pay $2.99 per minute. We actually had a customer report this to us in the last week.

US Carrier Problems

We have yet another report from a customer that they were told by a US carrier, Verizon, that their cell phone would work in Costa Rica, and once they got there found out that it wouldn't. We are not sure which Customer Support Manual they are failing to update over there, but they seem to continue to give out bad information. Whether you rent a mobile phone from our company, or get it by some other means, make sure you have a GSM phone that is combatible with the network down there. Other technologies won't work, and even the GSM mobile phone network for Costa Rica is not as open as other countries. Thanks for reading. We appreciate your business!

GSM vs. TDMA

The internet can provide us with a wealth of information when we are traveling to new places, but one must be careful to find updated information that reflects the current climate of your destination.

There is a lot of dated information out there that suggests that TDMA (older technology) cell phones work better in Costa Rica, when compared to GSM (newer technology) cells phones on the local network. We believe that this may have been true in years past, but this is probably not accurate today. I.C.E., the Costa Rican company that controls and develops the cellular network down there, has put a lot of work into upgrading the GSM network. At the same time, they have not, as an attempt to phase out TDMA technology, committed any resources to repairing or upgrading the TDMA network. We get many customers contacting us stating that they read online somewhere that TDMA is the way to go. Often times with a little more homework, we find that the post they are reading was written in 2004. Please be aware of this when renting a phone for your trip to Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Cellular Connection carries both types of mobile phones for Costa Rica-TDMA and GSM, and will accommodate for both if needed. We also, try and keep up with local network coverage results so we know what works best. We are happy to contact your destination, i.e. hotel, school etc. and get their opinion before we send out one of our phones to you.

US Cellular Phones in Costa Rica

Hola,

We just got back from another wonderful trip to Costa Rica and wanted to share a few things with our customers. Although, once again, we were told by our Verizon rep's that our Verizon cell phones would work down there, they did not. We we're about 99% sure that Verizon's phones wouldn't work, as we've been told by countless customers that they wouldn't, but we decided to verify this for ourselves. Most of Verizon's phones are CDMA phones, so they are completely non-compatible with the networks down there. We end up getting a lot of business from Verizon and Sprint customers that were told they're phones would roam on the network down there, only to find out they wouldn't. In the event that your US carrier can roam on the Costa Rica ICE network, you would have to have a GSM phone that is a quad band phone to work. Most of the US phones are not. If are fortunate enough to be able to roam down there, be careful on the per minute rates, as most cellular companies charge over $2.00/minute to call back to the US.

The second thing we want to share, a bit of a teaser.. but we are working towards a partnership with ICE (the only cellular and telecommunications company in Costa Rica) to offer a prepaid service. We will have more information on this shortly, but we believe this is great news to see ICE moving forward with their services. It is also a sign that Costa Rica Cellular Connection is being recognized by our clients and vendors for superior service in our industry. This should go a long way to helping us in accommodating the demand we have created by offering a trustworthy service to our customers over the years.

If you are looking for a cheap way to contact people outside of the states, try skype. We use it to contact our family and employees in Costa Rica when we are not there. Many of our customers us the service to cut down on cost when traveling abroad, by either having friends or family back home contact them on our phones (works out great with one of our free incoming plans) or using it in internet cafes to dial out. The rates are far cheaper than you will find for local phone companies, or cellular providers like Verizon and at&t cellular.

You can prepay for minutes, so it's easy to keep track of costs, and it's available anywhere you can find a high-speed internet connection. You will need a headset that works with your computer, pretty easy to find at any computer or electronics shop.

"The Holiday Inn Aurola is in the best location. All of the major attractions and parks are within walking distance. From the Menu, go to "Messages". Select this option. Once in the Messages option go to "Create Message". Start by typing in the email address of the person you wish to send the email to. Right after you have typed in the email address open a parenthesis inserting it using the symbols and write the subject of your email. Close the parenthesis. Continue by writing your email message in that space. The total length of the email, including the address and subject is up to 160 spaces or characters.
After typing in you message, go to "Options" and hit "Send". In the number Space you will always enter 1000.

We've had several customers ask us if our phones work with calling cards, and if this might save them on the long distance rate. A few people have mentioned that some other companies claim to offer calling cards to make more affordable calls than the rates we offer. Although we are not fans of dialing 37 access numbers to make a call ourselves, our phones do work with calling cards. Most of the companies offering this service have Internationally blocked phones, so you do not have a choice in how to place a call to the US or where ever in the world you are calling to.
We advise customers, whether you plan on renting a Costa Rica Cellular Connection phone or not, to watch out for the fees involved in addition to the quoted rates on calling cards. Often times you will find that you are paying the local calling rate, plus the calling card rate to the your home country, plus an often unadvertised one time per call access fee. ICE (local telecommunications company) has expanded the numeration ofor their cellulalr service network as well as all land lines from 7 digits to 8 with the objective of creating 10,000,000 more numbers to satisfy demand for the next 10 years.

Your rental cell phone numbers from Costa Rica Cellular Connection have changed to eight digits starting March 20.

Eight-digit cell phone numners and land line numbers were set to go into effect in Costa Rica on Thursday, March 20.

This is how it works:
Add an 8 to the beginning of your rental cellular number. For example if your mobile phone number assigned by Costa Rica Cellular Connection prior to the change was 882-4420, now dial 8882-4420.
These changes also apply for people in the US or Canada reaching you on your rental cell phones from Costa Rica Cellular Connection.

Calls from the US or Canada placed to the prior 882-4420 are now dialed 011-506-8882-4420.

If you are using your rental cell to dial local land lines, add a 2 at the beginning of the existing number, like this: old number for a Taxi service in San José prior to the change was 224-7979, after March 20th, dial 2224-7979 with your cell phone.

International SMS enabled for GSM phones

The Costa Rican GSM cellular phones are now able to send and receive international SMS (short message text).

The ICE (Costa Rican Electricity Institute) is currently running a pilot plan to test the service. ICE is the only telecommunications provider in Costa Rica for cell phones, land lines and internet.

So far, the international messages are only available between the Costa Rican cellular phones and other five countries (USA, Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua and El Salvador).

To do so, the user needs to write the message and utilize the number as when placing an international phone call: 00 + country code + phone number.

I.e. to send a message to the US you use the number as:

00 + 1 + area code + phone number.

Currently the messages cost the same as local SMS; however this could change within the next 6 months.

Why do you rent Costa Rica Cellular Connection phones in the US?
We have the phones available in the US because we want to make things really convenient and easy for our customers. We ship the phone to you FedEx Ground or Express before your trip, which is cheap and fast. That way when you land in CR all you have to do is turn on your rental phone and you’re ready to go. Start making and receiving calls that minute. No hassles trying to meet up with anyone or trying to find an office in town somewhere.

How long does it take to get the phone?
We work with FedEx and shipping is very fast. For Ground, 4-5 business days, but if you need it in a hurry we can Express it to you Overnight, 2 Day Air or Express Saver (3 days tops). At the time of shipment I’ll send you the tracking number for you to check on the progress of the shipment. Do you have your own account you would like to use? Just let me know and I’ll send it to using your account.

Can I use my cell phone is Costa Rica?
Cell phones from the US don’t usually work in Costa Rica. Your cell provider might have said that it’s fine, but from our experience the only phones that do work sometimes are ATT, but their rates are outrageous. Please compare!

What if I’m already in Costa Rica, Can I still get a phone?
Absolutely! We have some phones available in CR. Just call or email me and we’ll figure out when/where to deliver the phone to you. Most of our phones are in the USA, but sometimes people hear about us when they are already in CR so we want to help those customers as well. There is fee for delivery and pick up since it requires someone to go out to meet you. We will deliver the phone in the metropolitan San Jose area.

How do I return the phone?
The package we send you includes a prepaid return label. All you need to do when you get back is find the closest FedEx location and drop it off. Or if you have your own account with FedEx, UPS or DHL go a head and send it to us using your shipping company.

How good is the coverage in Costa Rica?
The local Costa Rica network has 75%-80% of country covered. The coverage is good in most populated and tourist areas. If you are traveling to a very remote location you might experience some coverage holes. We would be happy to call you hotel/area in advance to check for quality of coverage in your remote destination.

What kind of phones do you rent?
We offer both TDMA and GSM phones. Just let us know what kind of phone you prefer. We rent mostly Nokia for GSM, and Motorola and Nokia for TDMA.

What comes with my phone?
Your phone package includes the rental cell phone with a wall charger, carrying case, a car charger if requested, calling instructions, and a prepaid return shipping label. Also, when your phone is shipped out, we’ll let you know what your assigned number will be and you to start giving it to friends, family and business.

Can I just rent a SIM card put in my phone?
We rent the phone all together, but you could try it and see if it works. You need to make sure that you’re cell phone is quad band and unlocked. The reason we always give you the actual phone is because it may not always work and we would hate for you not to be able to communicate with loved ones and business.

How come you offer much lower rates than the other rental companies and the car rentals in CR?
We want to make sure that our service is affordable and convenient, and that you can rent a phone on any budget. All of the companies offering cell phone rental services in CR do the same thing. We get the phones from the local communications company and rent them out to travelers. We charge a profit on top of what we are charged. We came up with a fair plan that can accommodate any budget and still make a profit.

How do I pay?
We take all major credit cards, Visa, Master Card, American Express, and Discovery. At the time of rental, we authorize your card for $200 (like when you check in at hotel and they take your card for incidentals). Your credit card statement will show a charge of $50 plus shipping. For example, if you had a phone shipped to you in CO, it would be a charge of $60. With Costa Rica Cellular Connection there are no airtime minimums or daily fees! At the end of the rental, we process an invoice for you and charge you for the airtime used. If you rent the phone for more than 30 days, the activation fee is charged every 30 days.

Do I get call details in my invoice?
Yes, we always send out a long distance call log that includes, the date, the number called, and minutes of calls.

Do I have to use any airtime? What if I want the phone only for emergencies and I don’t plan on making any calls?
No. The rental would only cost $50 + shipping! We understand that you might just want the cell phone for emergencies and the security of being in a foreign country. If you don’t use the cell phone, you don’t pay for any airtime.

Can I forward my local US or Canada calls to my Costa Rica Cellular Connection cell phone?
Yes! All you have to do is tell your long distance provider and they will give you instructions on how to set it up. Long distance charges probably apply, but then you would get calls for only .23 on your CRCC phone.
