Over the past 6+ years, of renting cell phones and wireless internet for Costa Rica, we have gotten countless questions about US carrier cellular phones roaming in Costa Rica. It is possible, albeit at ridiculously expensive rates, on a limited number of carriers, however most Verizon cell phones WILL NOT work in Costa Rica. Most Sprint phones will not work either. This is basically because their technology is not compatible with the network in Costa Rica. You will need a phone that takes a GSM sim card (not cdma like Verizon), unlocked, and compatible with the frequencies that the Costa Rican network is on. If you have a mobile internet card in the US, regardless of the carrier, this WILL not work with the Costa Rican phone network.
Because of the recent weather issues in Costa Rica causing emergencies and road closers, a few people traveling with some Costa Rican Cellular Connection customers found this out the hard way.
